EC issue show cause notice to BJP's Abhijit Gangopadhyay over remarks against CM
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has penned a letter to PM Modi, urging the recognition of Bengali as a classical language. In the correspondence, Banerjee highlights the extensive historical evolution of the language over two and a half millennia, emphasizing its cultural richness and eligibility for classical status. During a press conference at Navanna, Banerjee expressed frustration over what she perceives as prolonged neglect by the Center, comparing the situation to other states that have received such recognition.
She said, 'If other states get recognition, why won't Bengal get it?' In her statement, Banerjee not only addresses linguistic concerns but also touches upon the pending change in the state's name from 'West Bengal' to 'Bangla.' The CM questions the delay in the approval of the name change, asserting that a bill has already been passed in the assembly. She argues that the state's nomenclature should align with the linguistic identity, drawing parallels with other cities like Mumbai, formerly Bombay.
Banerjee contends that the change would not only preserve cultural identity but also alleviate logistical issues, such as alphabetical positioning in government meetings. Despite the state's response to the Center's inquiries on the matter, Banerjee expresses regret over the prolonged delay and has also communicated her concerns to the Prime Minister in writing.
